Here’s where you’ll really get creative with your coffee drinks. But first, let’s just break down the perfect strong cup of coffee.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to brewing coffee with a Moka pot:
1. Fill the Bottom Chamber: Remove the top chamber of the Moka pot and fill the bottom chamber with cold water. Make sure you don’t fill it past the safety valve.
2. Add Ground Coffee: Place the coffee grounds in the filter basket, filling it up to the top. You can adjust the amount of coffee to your liking, but a general rule of thumb is one tablespoon per cup.
I like to use a medium grind dark roast. This gives the most espresso like flavor plus it doesn’t fall through the filter basket. You can even go as fine as a medium-fine grind.
3. Assemble the Moka pot: Screw the top chamber onto the bottom chamber and put it on the stove. Set the burner to medium heat.
You can use a gas stove or an electric stovetop. Induction cooktops don’t work.
4. Monitor the Pot: As the water boils and the pressure builds, coffee will flow into the top chamber. You’ll hear a sputtering sound, and that’s when you know you’re getting close.
5. Remove From Heat: When you hear the sputtering sound change to a hissing sound, it’s time to remove the Moka pot from the stove. This means that all the water has moved to the top chamber, and the coffee is done.
6. Enjoy Your Coffee: Pour the coffee into your mug and enjoy! You can add milk and sugar to taste.
